Creating Assets in Concert
What Are Assets?
In digital design and construction, paper-based drawing systems are evolving into direct digital outputs of design data. Today, this is in the form of PDF files of traditional drawings, but it also includes raw data files used in the construction or fabrication process. These data files (even the PDF versions of drawings) are more important in the process. Therefore, at Concert we refer to data files as Assets, because they are valuable. Assets can be any file of any format from any source. Here we will help you understand the value of creating Assets in Concert.
Asset Recording and Versioning
There are two ways of creating Assets in Concert: 1) manually bringing a file from your server or system into Concert or 2) through an Integration (learn more about integrations here.) Assets always retain their original file name.
It is important to understand that Concert creates a RECORD of the file and the RECORD is the Asset. We refer to this record as the fingerprint. Concert creates a COPY of the file in our system for convenience, but this is not required to create the record. If you wish to turn off this feature, you can do so in the Project settings.
Concert organizes Assets using a standard file directory tree, a familiar structure similar to most file management systems. When a new Asset of the same name is introduced, Concert compares it and records a new version if the data has changed. All versions of a file are easily accessible through the asset management interface located in the Overview tab.
How to Create Folders in Assets
- In the Project, navigate to the Assets tab. You manage and organize your Assets here.
- The first time you access the Project the area under Assets will be empty. Before you start adding Assets Concert recommends building a basic directory structure to help you manage your assets.
- At the top of the Assets section select the New Folder icon to create a Folder. A dialog box will appear.
- Name the Folder and click Create to finish. You can create as many Folders as you require. You can create Subfolders by clicking the link into an existing folder and selecting the New Folder icon.
- The new folder will appear in the Assets directory
Adding Assets to Folders
Basic methods for creating Assets in Concert. First, you must navigate to the folder you want to place the Asset(s) in:
-
- Method 1- Select the Add Files button and follow the instructions.
- Method 2 – Simply drag and drop the assets to the directory on the screen.
Advanced methods:
-
- Method 1 – Create a .zip archive of the files you wish to add and Add the .zip through the Add Files button or drag-and-drop. Concert will replicate the same directory/folder structure and file organization as the .zip archive.
- Method 2 – Integration. Concert integrations are another method to automatically transfer Assets from one platform, like BIM 360, to Concert automatically and with folder structures. Refer to Integrations. for more information.
Editing Assets
To rename or move to a different folder any Assets:
- Select the Edit function to rename or relocate the Asset
- A pop-up box will appear to either change the directory the Asset is in or to change the Assets file name. The ‘Directory’ option will change the location of the Asset. When using this function to move an Asset to an existing folder, you must spell the folder name exactly the same, including capitalization and spaces, or a new folder will be created based on what you type.
- Selecting ‘File Name’ will allow you to change the name of the Asset.
Tip: To change the directory location use forward slashes to indicate the directory path. For example to move the Asset to a folder titled ‘BIM” you will enter “/BIM” for the directory path.
